We at Panatella Dental would like you to know about some of the most common reasons for tooth extractions, what to expect during a tooth extraction procedure, and what your neighbourhood family dental center in Calgary says about how long it takes the average person to recover.

What are the reasons for extracting a tooth?

There are several reasons why your dentist might extract one of your teeth, the four most common being:
  • Overcrowding—This occurs when there isn’t enough room inside your mouth for an emerging tooth, or an emerging tooth is causing damage to its neighbouring teeth. This is often a problem with wisdom teeth
  • Infection—If a decaying tooth has become infected, there’s a risk that the infection could spread. Your dentist may suggest an extraction to prevent this from happening.
  • Braces—If your child needs braces, a tooth extraction may be necessary to aid in the correct alignment of their adult teeth.
  • Trauma—If you’ve suffered direct trauma to your teeth, you’ll need to seek emergency dental care from a Calgary clinic. If the damage is bad enough, they may recommend a tooth extraction.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

It’s normal to experience swelling and discomfort for the first 24 to 48 hours after a tooth extraction. This pain will, however, quickly subside and your gums should be completely healed within one to two weeks after your extraction.

What does a dry socket look and feel like?

A dry socket is a complication associated with a tooth extraction. It is caused by the improper formation of a blood clot, or by a blood clot that has become dislodged, and looks like a hole in the bone. Because a dry socket can lead to a painful infection, you should seek emergency dental care at a Calgary clinic if you believe you have a dry socket.

Can a toothache go away on its own?

Dental pain of any kind typically indicates a more serious underlying issue. Make an appointment with one of the dentists at Panatella Dental as soon as possible to get the treatment you need and prevent the problem from worsening.
