How to tackle tartar buildup
Between visits to your dentist, however, it’s important to have a regular oral care routine that includes brushing with toothpaste and flossing. Oral healthcare professionals stress the importance of a daily routine at least in part because it’s a primary way to fight tartar buildup on your teeth and near your gums.
At Panatella Dental, your family dental centre in Calgary, we don’t just like to give our patients the best care we can; we also like to educate our patients about oral health so they can be in control of their health. Here’s a little information about tartar and how to fight it.
What is tartar and how does it build up?
You’ve probably heard of tartar before but might not know exactly what it is. When we eat foods—particularly sugary or starchy ones—some of that food remains on our teeth after we’re done eating. Although some of these foods (such as soda, for example) are harmful to our teeth in themselves, the bigger problem is the bacteria in our mouths that thrive on these foods that cling to our teeth. When bacteria build up over time on our teeth it’s called “plaque.” When plaque accumulates, it can harden and become even more difficult to get off. This hardened plaque is known as “tartar.”
What can I do to fight tartar buildup?
When tartar builds, it attracts even more plaque, which then hardens into tartar itself in a vicious cycle. Luckily, there are a few easy things you can do to remove tartar and prevent it from building up, including:
• Brushing and flossing regularly. You guessed it. Tartar is one of the main reasons dentists stress the need for regular brushing. If you don’t do it every day, you give tartar a chance to form.
• Switching to an electric toothbrush. Modern conveniences like an electric toothbrush can make your routine more efficient and effective. The special motions that an electric toothbrush offers are specifically designed to break up plaque and tartar.
• Changing your habits. An easy way to prevent tartar from starting in the first place is to have good lifestyle habits. Avoiding sugary drinks and starchy foods is a great idea. Soda and potato chips are delicious but are they worth the cost?
• Visiting a dentist regularly. Even if you have the best oral health routine in the world, a cleaning from the dentist is still the best way to fight the tartar that has built up on your teeth.
