Reduce Pain with Tooth Extractions in Calgary

If you have intense pain in your mouth, it could be caused by a number of problems. Broken teeth and teeth damaged by decay may be the cause of your pain. In some instances, your dentist will be able to fix the problem with a filling or crown, but that’s not always the best option.

When there is too much damage to repair the tooth, it has to be extracted. A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in your jawbone. While this may sound like a scary procedure, the team at Panatella Dental will do everything possible to keep you comfortable during your tooth extraction procedure in Calgary.

How Is a Tooth Extraction Performed?

There are two main types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical. Both of these procedures can be performed by your family dentist, but they require different techniques during the procedure. Before either procedure takes place, your dentist will take an X-ray of your mouth to determine which type of extraction should be used.

  • Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in your mouth. Your dentist will loosen your tooth with a tool called an elevator and then use a tool called a forceps to remove the tooth.
  • Surgical extractions are more complex and are performed on teeth that are broken off at your gum line or have not come into your mouth yet. Your dentist will make a small incision into your gum near the infected tooth in order to remove the tooth. Sometimes it is also necessary to remove some of the bone around the tooth.

When & Why Do You Need Tooth Extractions?

The most common reasons for tooth extractions in Calgary are severely broken or decayed teeth that cannot be restored by typical treatments. However, there are many other instances when tooth extractions are necessary, including:

  • Loose tooth – if your tooth has become loose due to a sporting or other accident, it may need to be removed.
  • Baby teeth – sometimes your baby teeth don’t fall out in time on their own to make room for your permanent teeth; if this is the case, the baby teeth need to be extracted.
  • Wisdom teeth – your third molars can wreak havoc on your other teeth. If your wisdom teeth are coming in crooked or are getting infected, you’ll need to have them extracted.
  • Braces – if you’re getting braces it may be necessary to extract one or more of your teeth to make room for your teeth that are shifting into correct alignment.
