Dental crowns are becoming more and more popular with patients all across Calgary. And for good reason too. They offer a comfortable and natural looking solution for some common complaints. If you’ve got questions about dental crowns, we’ve got the answers you’re looking for below.

What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is an artificial cap used to cover imperfections in your natural teeth. Dental crowns can not only improve the appearance of your smile but can also protect your teeth from further damage as long as you practice good oral hygiene and make regular dental cleaning appointments with your Calgary dentist.

Why would I need dental crowns?

You might need to get a crown if your natural teeth are damaged, discoloured or misshapen. However, if your teeth are beyond repair, your dentist may recommend one or more tooth extractions and restoration using a dental implant.

What are dental crowns made of?

The most commonly used materials are gold, acrylic composite, porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Speak to one of the dentists from our northern hills dental centre for individualized advice on which material, or combination of materials, would be best for you.

What is the procedure like?

There are typically two appointments necessary when you are getting a crown.

First, your dentist will file the natural tooth to make room for the crown and take an impression of your mouth so a custom crown can be made for you. You’ll be fitted with a temporary crown while your custom crown is being made.

In the second appointment, your dentist will confirm that the crown is the right colour and shape before cementing it into your mouth.

How long do dental crowns normally last?
On average, a crown should last about 10 years provided you are practicing good oral hygiene. The exact durability of the crown depends on the individual as well as on the material that was used to create it.

What do I do if a crown breaks?
If your crown breaks, visit an emergency dentist in Calgary without delay, especially if you are in pain.

Can I still get dental crowns if I’m pregnant?
Generally, yes. But you should speak to one of the dentists at Panatella Dental about your concerns so we can offer advice based on your individual situation.
